AT&T Attempts to Stall Sprint-Clearwire Deal

Aug 25, 2008 4:54 PM

While politely suggesting that AT&T "does not fundamentally oppose the underlying transaction," the big telco nevertheless accuses Clearwire of not accurately disclosing the full amount of 2.5 GHz spectrum.

As we predicted in our Sidecut Report on WiMax, the "new" Clearwire deal, with its heavy-hitter lineup of investors and their $3.2 billion in capital, was sure to attract the attention of the big telcos, namely AT&T and Verizon. In our predictions we guessed that the big telcos would turn up the heat on Clearwire any way they could, and today it looks like we were right since AT&T just filed a rather lengthy complaint with the FCC, suggesting that Clearwire's merger application needs a bit more work.

Huawei announces 802.16e-2005 WiMAX wins in Pakistan and Malaysia

Aug 9, 2008 10:09 PM

Mobilink and Asiaspace build momentum for Huawei's WiMAX infrastructure portfolio.

Huawei Technologies of China announced a pair of mobile WiMAX wins this week. The equipment manufacturer will supply 802.16e-2005 network infrastructure to Mobilink of Pakistan and Asiaspace of Malaysia. As a result of the new customer projects, Huawei claims 19 overseas commercial WiMAX contracts.

Mobilink is the largest GSM operator in Pakistan and a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom. The network will be deployed to central business districts and hot spots including the cities of Faisalabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Sialkot. Huawei will provide a solution consisting of base stations, Access Service Network (ASN) gateways, and network management system. Work began late last year on the backhaul build-out of 270 wireless links from Canada's DragonWave Inc. Pakistan also has a significant nationwide network under development from Wateen. The Warid Telecom company announced that it had ordered 198,000 CPE based on the 802.16e-2005 standard from Motorola last year.

Mobile WiMax is Being Buried Alive?

July 4, 2008 12:09 PM

By their diagnosis, the future of mobile WiMax seems bleak indeed. However, the image they portray may be oversimplified to WiMax’s disfavor

WiMax news has been dominated by a London research firm’s recent announcement that mobile WiMax might be dead on arrival.

“Recent events have been unfavourable toward Mobile WiMAX,” says Frost & Sullivan’s Programme Manager Luke Thomas, referring to Sprint’s delayed deployment of its commercial WiMax network. The firm then focuses on the two aspects of mobile WiMax:

Are We Headed Towards a 100 Mbps Demand for Broadband Wireless?

July 2, 2008 11:43 AM

Wireline service providers are already starting to deliver 10's of Mbps of service and are talking about 100 Mbps---will broadband wireless soon follow?

I saw a blurb today talking about Verizon's announcement at NXTcomm of an expansion of its 50 Mbps FIOS service to all of its markets.  The service, previously only available in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Rhode Island and New York, will offer 50 Mbps download speeds coupled with 20 Mbps upload capability.

What is the Carrier Roadmap for Offering True Device Openness?

June 21, 2008 8:32 PM

Verizon has told the FCC that it would prefer a nationwide early termination fee policy rather than the current arrangement that lets individual states set policy for fees. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Verizon suggested that the FCC use its own policy model for setting ETF pricing. Verizon thinks that trial periods for new customers, opt-out choices, pro-rated ETF fees and even no ETF options when devices aren't purchased at contract renewal is the way to go.

4G Backhaul--Operational Innovation Enables Business Model Success

June 17, 2008 11:12 AM

By Greg Chiasson, PRTM Management Consultants

Overcoming the backhaul bottleneck is a key challenge in successfully deploying WiMAX, LTE, and other next-generation communication systems. Backhaul is a critical element of 4G business models, affecting capital investment, operational expense, time to market, and the customer experience.

While backhaul-related technical and deployment issues abound, making the business model work in the face of backhaul costs is even more daunting. Even today, backhaul is one of the largest operational expenses a carrier faces, comprising up to 40 percent of recurring network expenses. 4G systems, which demand substantially greater backhaul capacity, have the potential to significantly magnify these cost challenges.

WiFi vs. WiMAX

June 8, 2008 10:05 PM

Comparing WiMax to WiFi is akin to comparing apples to oranges. Initially it’s easy to see why the comparison would exist, as most people think WiMax is merely a more robust version of WiFi. Indeed they are both wireless broadband technologies, but they differ in the technical execution and ultimately their business case is very different. In addition to the technical differences that exist, the marketplace difference is that equipment is more or less non-existent for WiMax and certainly not geared towards a residential environment with very high pricing to be expected. It will take at least 2 years to see equipment of mass market uptake pricing.

Intel considers possible LTE + WiMAX tie-up

June 3, 2008 9:57 AM
Caroline Gabriel, Weekly Features Contributing Editor

Intel has for many years been far more than the leading chipmaker. It is also a company that creates markets and sets trends, in order to seed its own future revenue streams. In wireless, examples have been Wi-Fi, WiMedia and of course WiMAX, as Intel looks to supply the silicon for the mobile internet devices - from phones to mini-notebooks to consumer electronics - that it believes will become almost ubiquitous. Its support for these three "Wi" technologies has been partly, of course, enforced by its significant disadvantage in the chip platforms that may, in the end, dominate that mobile internet revolution - the cellphone architectures favored by Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and others. By contrast, the Intel-backed systems come from a PC/IP heritage and, if they can become universal, the x86 giant is in pole position to lead the market as it shifts towards 4G. However, if the customers resist their charms, Intel will not remain religiously faithful to its chosen platforms for longer than makes commercial sense, and the past week has brought two sets of comments from senior executives that suggest the chipmaker's old dream of making WiMAX the backbone of the mobile internet has faded, and it is gearing up to embrace a world where LTE will take the leading role.
